Drowsy driving can be a threat to everyone on the road

Everyone knows that driving is a task that requires a person's full concentration. The stakes are simply too high to drive while distracted or intoxicated. Despite this, people continue to engage in these risky types of behavior. Another threat that gets less attention, but is still a real problem, is drowsy driving. People who take to the road without enough rest put themselves and others at risk.

On August 8, 2016, the Governor's Highway Safety Association released a study titled Wake Up Call! Understanding Drowsy Driving and What States Can Do. This study found that more than one-third of American adults, or 83.6 million people, get less than seven hours of sleep each night.

Who is most likely to be in a drowsy driving accident?

According to the report, three groups of people were at a higher risk for a drowsy driving accident.

  • Teenagers and adults 25 years old and younger
  • People who work night shifts
  • People with sleep disorders

In fact, teenagers and younger adults are involved in more than half of all crashes involving drowsy drivers. This is likely due to the fact that young drivers have less experience, combined with the fact that many young people simply do not get sufficient amounts of rest.

People who work night shifts and irregular hours need to take appropriate measures to get enough rest. Unfortunately, many people who work these jobs are not able to get the rest they need.

What are effective steps to combat drowsy driving?

According to the authors of the study, the battle against drowsy driving must be fought on multiple fronts. Education for all drivers, but particularly teen drivers, can help. Collecting more data on drowsy drivers may also help understand these problems.

Anyone person who has been in a car accident caused by another's negligent or reckless conduct needs to work with skilled, experienced attorneys. For years, people across Montgomery County, Bucks County and beyond have placed their trust in the injury lawyers of Friedman Schuman, P.C.
