Americans unsure about autonomous vehicles

Pennsylvania residents shopping for new cars, trucks or sport utility vehicles likely find themselves being presented with features that essentially hand over control of vehicles to the vehicles themselves. Designed to improve safety, self-driving or autonomous driving technology is continuing to advance and make its way to market but just how much safer this may make the roads is yet to be seen.

Features available today include self parking, automatic braking in emergency situations and adaptive cruise control. When asked in a survey conducted by AAA in 2017, 59 percent of Americans said they would be interested in seeking out such technologies in their next vehicle purchases. Another 25 percent of people said they would not want such technologies.

Even though a majority of people indicated an interest in some self-driving features, the vast majority of respondents said that the thought of being in a fully autonomous vehicle was one they were afraid of. A total of 75 percent of people responded as such while only 10 percent of people said they would feel safer than today if sharing the road with these vehicles. In addition, 54 percent said that sharing the road with fully self-driving cars made them feel less safe than today.

The ultimate safety of self-driving vehicles is yet to be seen but as it unfolds, Pennsylvania residents may want to remember that they will always have the ability to talk with an attorney if a crash happens.
