The focus four on construction sites

Do you work in the construction industry in Pennsylvania? Perhaps you have a family member or a friend who is employed as a construction worker. Either way, you will know the level of danger that is faced on construction job sites. Despite the inherent danger involved in this line of work, employers are bound by certain laws to follow protocols designed to keep workers safe while on the job. Providing training on safety topics is part of the employer responsibility as well as enforcing proper adherence to safety regulations.

As explained by the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety Health Administration, there are four factors identified as primary causes of fatalities on construction sites. Together, these factors are often referred to as the focus four because dedicated focus should be given to preventing accidents caused by these things.

The focus four includes:

1. Electrocutions

2. Falls

3. Being hit/struck by objects

4. Getting caught in-between objects

Falls could happen from rooftops, scaffolds and other areas. Being struck or trapped between objects might happen in trenches if a collapse happens, for example. In addition to the focus four, lack of proper protection, machinery malfunction and exposure to toxic substances may also cause injuries or illnesses to construction workers.
