Distractions may be killing more pedestrians

Many Pennsylvania residents may be excited at the return of spring in part because getting out on foot is easier and more pleasant than during the dark, cold month of winter. While certainly the benefits of walking or running are well-known, there are definitely risks associated with being a pedestrian and sharing the road with cars, trucks and other vehicles.

Data shows that between January and June of 2016, 77 pedestrians in Pennsylvania were killed in accidents with vehicles. Several cities and areas have been working consciously for the past few years to improve pedestrian safety. While the thought of 77 families mourning the deaths of their loved ones is not positive, an even worse thought is the reality that Pennsylvania is in better shape than the rest of the country.

Nationally the number of pedestrians who were killed between 2010 and 2015 jumped by 25 percent. In the same timeframe, the total number of deaths in vehicular accidents rose by just six percent. Distracted driving is said to be one of the biggest contributing factors in the increasing number of pedestrians killed. The more than 6,000 pedestrians who died in 2016 across the U.S. represent an 11 percent increase over the prior year. While certainly pedestrians bear some responsibility for their own safety, drivers in any type of vehicle are clearly a large part of the problem.

When a pedestrian accident occurs, people may want to find out how they can seek compensation by talking to an attorney in Pennsylvania.
