Family receives $8 million settlement for birth injury

Expectant mothers in Pennsylvania who seek medical care and treatment when they experience potentially unusual or problematic symptoms during pregnancy should be able to trust that their health care providers will respond promptly and appropriately. When an unborn baby's life is involved, time can be of the essence and make a big difference in the outcome of a situation.

Such was the case for one family who settled with Temple University for a reported $8 million after delays in treatment contributed to severe birth injuries for their child. Upon arriving at the hospital indicating that she had noticed a reduction in the amount of movement of her baby. At this point, she was 37 weeks into her pregnancy. Nurses are said to have found some test results concerning. Despite all of this, the physician failed to even see the woman for a full three hours.

Reports later suggest that the baby may have experienced some brain damage before the mother even arrived at the hospital but the extended time she waited before being attended to likely exacerbated the situation. By the time the baby was delivered via Caesarean section, severe and lifelong brain damage had occurred including the most extreme form of cerebral palsy, microcephaly.

Families that find themselves faced with lifelong disabilities for their children who experience birth injuries might want to talk with a lawyer to learn how they might pursue compensation to help provide care for their loved ones.
