3 important steps to take after you slip and fall

Slipping and falling can be a jarring and stressful experience, but the first steps you take after your accident are important for getting appropriate compensation. If you choose to file a slip and fall lawsuit, you must prove the property owner is liable.

The core basis of proving liability is showing your injury was caused by a dangerous condition that the owner knew about. Here are three steps to take after your accident to help your case.

1. Document important details

Detailed documents will help you when you see a doctor and lawyer. The more you document about the accident, the stronger your case will be. Write down any visible defects, dangerous conditions and other circumstances related to your fall. You should also note whether there were any steps the owner took to warn people about the danger, such as a warning sign. If possible, take pictures of the accident scene.

2. Seek medical attention

Even if your injuries do not seem serious, you should always get evaluated. What may seem like a simple ankle sprain or a knee scrape may be a small part of a more significant injury. Get a diagnosis of your injury and collect any records and bills related to your treatment.

3. Avoid giving a statement to insurance

After you report your injury, you will likely get a visit or phone call from the insurance adjuster to get a recorded statement about the accident and ensuing injuries. Generally, making a statement may not help you, and it could hurt your case if you say something wrong. It is a good idea to contact an attorney first to know exactly what you should do.

If you follow these three steps, you will be well on your way to building a successful slip and fall case. If you need help gathering important documents and receiving compensation, consult an attorney with experience in personal injury cases.
