4 easy ways for older motorcyclists to enjoy a safer ride

According to findings published in the medical journal Injury Prevention, while seniors who ride motorcycles are in fewer accidents than their 20- or 30-something counterparts, they sustain more serious injuries. It is simply a matter of aging and the accompanying physiological effects, and the results can be hospital visits, recovery time, legal assistance and insurance issues.

Among the many steps older bikers can take to ensure a safer ride, here are four of the easiest.

1. Be more colorful

If you are a member of the 60-plus motorcycle crowd, you probably love black, and your bike may be that famous non-color. Since it is unlikely you would trade it in for something in red or lime green, the alternative would be to wear high-visibility colors like yellow and orange. A vest and DOT-approved helmet in these colors will turn heads, which is precisely the objective.

2. Apply reflective tape

Apply reflective tape to your bike. Put it on your front forks and panniers. If you have a tall windscreen, put it around the top edge. You can also apply a patch of it to the back of your vest or jacket. The addition of reflective tape will make you and your motorcycle look like a much larger unit after dark.

3. Add lights to your bike

The more lights you have on your motorcycle, the greater the chance other motorists will see you. You can add plug-and-play Light Emitting Diodes, or LEDs, that put out a great deal of light. They are especially useful as turn signals. As running lights, they give you a wider, brighter profile. When activated, they provide a very bright, blinking signal.

4. Steer clear of blind spots

Either pass swiftly with care or lay back, but try your best to stay out of a motorist’s blind spot. It is not always easy to do, but you need to position yourself where other drivers can best see you. The aforementioned high-visibility colors will help with this effort.

Seek help if necessary

Remember that as an older motorcyclist, your vision, reflexes and reaction time are not as good as they once were. An accident is always a possibility, and it might not be your fault. Be smart, stay safe, and if the unexpected happens, seek legal assistance from an experienced personal injury attorney.
