Severe injury data for workplace accidents in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania residents know that they can be injured when on the job no matter what line of work they pursue. That said, it is a known fact that some industries and job functions do carry with them a higher-than-average rate of accident or risk of accident. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration tracks and reports a variety of workplace accident statistics and this information can give interesting insight into the types of incidents that happen when and where.

While OSHA has tracked job-related accidents for some time now, it was just two years ago that it initiated a program to track what it calls severe injuries. These include injuries that result in an employee being admitted to a hospital, losing an eye or having another body part amputated. Since this program began, Pennsylvania is being seen as a potential hotbed for these types of injuries. When looking at the data, injuries to fingers, hands and fingernails accounted for nearly one-third of all such severe injuries statewide.

In 2015 and 2016, there were 1,596 severe injures in the state as reported by employers. In contrast, of four other states more populous than Pennsylvania, two experienced more severe injuries and two experienced fewer. Texas experienced more than 3,200 and Florida nearly 2,000 while Illinois was the site of just over 1,200 and New York 984 severe injuries.

Certainly the reporting by employers of these events may influence statistics but it remains important for Pennsylvania workers to take proactive steps to seek compensation after an accident at work. Talking to an attorney may help people learn their best options.
