There has been a substantial uptick in cases involving nursing home neglect and abuse, leaving loved ones with permanent and devastating outcomes. One such instance recently led to multiple arrests and criminal charges, which were ultimately dropped. The story appeared on the front page of The Times Tribune on February 12th, 2023. It also appeared in The Citizen’s Voice.
Friedman Schuman Layser attorneys, Derek Layser and Brett Kaminsky, represent Carmela Mecca, an elderly woman who experienced severe neglect at the hands of Aventura at Terrace View, formerly known as Lackawanna Health and Rehab Center. During her time at the nursing home, staff members did not pay attention to the growth of Ms. Mecca’s nails. Much of this was due to lack of care and severe understaffing. As a result, Ms. Mecca’s nails grew so long that they grew through her hand, severing her tendons, with her nails reaching all the way down to the bone. When medical care was finally administered, doctors were unsure whether Carmela would be able to keep her hand. Doctors said her hand looked like “roadkill”.
Kaminsky stated, “The staff at Aventura at Terrace View knew about chronic staffing issues, which would inevitably lead to patient neglect, but failed to do anything about it. There is simply no excuse. When nursing homes like Terrace View put profits over staffing and the safety of its residents, people’s loved ones get hurt.”
