Safety Tips for Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day Weekend brings the end of summer. In order to celebrate, people participate in many traditions. This can include road trips, barbecues, fireworks, and more. These fun activities can also be dangerous if people are not cautious. This can cause serious injuries that have the potential to impact a person for the rest of their life. In order to avoid injury this Labor Day Weekend, it is important to implement the property safety tips. 

Driver Safety

As reported by AAA, about 35 million Americans traveled 50 miles or more during last year’s Labor Day Weekend. There are many vehicles on the roads throughout the state during the weekend. This can cause a great deal of congestion, which can lead to accidents if drivers are not careful. It is important for drivers to prepare for the weekend with the following safety measures:

  • Have a driving plan
  • Wear a seatbelt at all times
  • Be patient while driving
  • Stay alert
  • Contact local law enforcement in the event of a drunk driver

It is important to never drink and drive, which needs to be remembered for the holiday weekend. Doing so can endanger many people on the road. Drunk drivers can face harsh penalties consequences that can impact their lives. 

Water Safety

Many people participate in water activities during the holiday weekend. This can include pools, lakes, and oceans. While doing so, it is important to stay safe. This can be done by following these safety tips:

  • Do not consume alcohol while swimming or driving a boat
  • Carry safety equipment such as flotation devices and first aid kits
  • Always wear life preservers
  • Do not dive head first
  • Swim with a buddy
  • Never leave a child unattended near water or in it
  • Be aware of no-swim zones or shallow/deep areas

Grilling Safety

A frequent tradition during Labor Day Weekend is barbecuing. Grilling can be dangerous if the right safety precautions are not followed. This can include: 

  • Keep the grill away from the house or things that can catch fire (trees, bushes, etc.)
  • Keep children and pets away from the grill
  • Avoid using a charcoal starter or lighter fluid once coals are lit
  • Clean the grill after use
  • Keep spray water on hand in case of flare-ups

Firework Safety

It is well known that fireworks can be dangerous if they are not used correctly. This is why they need to be used legally and safely. This can be done by implementing the following precautions:

  • Wear eye protection
  • Do not ignite indoors or in your hands
  • Have adults present at all times
  • Keep water nearby in the event of a fire
  • Never carry fireworks in your pocket
  • Don’t throw or point fireworks at people
  • Stay a safe distance away after lighting the display
  • Do not consume alcohol while handling fireworks
