Common Medical Device Injuries in Pennsylvania

Technology in the medical field has advanced tremendously over the years to allow ill or injured patients access to better treatment methods. Medical devices are widely used in the medical field to aid patients who are facing certain health conditions. Unfortunately, sometimes the medical devices that are used actually result in additional issues for the patient, even as serious as injuries or death. Even with the most skilled team of medical professionals, a patient can be injured by a faulty medical device.

There are many different medical devices that have a tendency to create problems for patients either immediately or over a period of time after it has been installed. Some of the most problematic devices include the following:

  • Intra-Uterine Devices (IUD’s) are an effective form of birth control. However, if the device moves, it can cause serious damage to the internal organs. In addition, if the device is installed correctly but is faulty, it may cause ectopic pregnancies or pelvic inflammatory disease.
  • Inferior vena cava filters (IVC’s) aid patients who have a risk of blood clots by thinning the blood. However, if the device gets loose, it can puncture internal organs.
  • Metal hip and knee implants may cause metallosis or need to be re-installed with additional surgery if they become dislocated.
