Pennsylvania Is An Employment-At-Will State

Pennsylvania is known as an “employment-at-will” state. Simply put, this means that employers can legally hire or fire any employee for any reason at all. However, the exception to this rule is that employers in Pennsylvania are prohibited from firing, demoting, or otherwise discriminating against employees due to certain protected characteristics, or in violation of “public policy.” This means if you believe you were discriminated against due to your race, gender, age, color, religion, disability, or another protected characteristic, you may have a valid discrimination claim against your employer. An employee rights lawyer from Friedman Schuman can help you file that claim, can help recognize the public policy exceptions to employment at will and fight for the justice you deserve.

Time Limit on Filing a Discrimination Claim

As with many other types of legal claims, individuals who are looking to file discrimination claims against their employer must do so within a certain timeframe. You must file your discrimination claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission within 180 days of the date the discrimination occurred. Some types of claims have even shorter filing deadlines. Waiting longer than a filing deadline may permanently bar you from taking legal action. Our firm is ready to assist you today.
